2014 Beginnings and Expectations
In Math this week, we used Digi-Blocks to understand place value. We are working on adding, trying to find different ways to make 10; then we will work our way up to adding and subtracting within 1000. Also, we will use this knowledge to continue the relationship between addition and subtraction.
In Reading, we discussed the question of the week, what we may learn by trading with one another, and understood that we all have knowledge.
I have completed all the DIBELS and DOLCH Reading tests for each student this week. The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of early literacy skills from kindergarten through sixth grade. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills. DOLCH is the list of sight words that students should be able to read by their grade level. At this age group, students are expected to read 70 words correct per minute with 95% accuracy and retell using at least 20 words with meaningful sequence of the story.
Next week, the students will take a computerized math assessment powered by Star Math. This assessment will help guide instructional groups.
Also starting Monday is Walk to Read. Students have been groped by the District ELA team and our principal based on reading abilities and assessment scores. Students go to the particular teacher who will be teaching their group.
Our class consists of 24 students as of today; we will soon be at capacity of 26 students. 13 boys, and 11 girls. 15 students are reading far below grade level due to many different circumstances. Some students have either never had any schooling prior to arriving in my class, have had interrupted schooling due to war or financial issues, or have no one at home who can help them practice English.

Wonderful first week!
Welcome back to school!
Room 205 has had a wonderful week! Students have earned numerous individual Bumble Bucks and as a class we have already earned 7 Bumble Bucks!
The students have been writing sooooooooo much. Students are learning to take notes and use notebooks. They are slowly learning how to use their notebooks more efficiently, writing on the lines and using all the space appropriately on each page, and showing all of their math work.
So far, they have learned place value, solving word problems and explaining their thinking, understanding character, setting, theme, and character building. Students are shaping up while walking nicely in line in the hallway. Students are sharing their supplies...they are such nice students!
This is the best third grade class in the school!
Many students are prepared with all of their necessary school supplies. Thank you to those parents who have already provided their children with their learning needs. Some parents have yet to buy the supplies. However, if there are still a few students who do not have what they need, I will be sure to provide them myself. Do not worry if you are facing a hardship. I can provide.
PLEASE COMPLETE THE SCHOOL FORMS AND RETURN THEM TO ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, ESPECIALLY THE YELLOW EMERGENCY FORM. THANK YOU!

will be working very hard in room 205 this year. Your support at home is very important to
your child’s success in school. I

This support includes:
ü Making sure your child has excellent attendance and has an early bedtime. When your child is absent just one day they miss a
great deal of instruction. The 3rd
grade curriculum is rigorous and your child will be working hard in school each
day. Your child needs to be in school everyday and well rested to keep up with
all the daily lessons in each subject.

Limiting the amount of television and video games played during the
school week. Saving these activities for Friday, Saturday,
and Sunday is a good way to reward daily reading and homework completion.

Monitoring your child’s homework and daily home reading.
ü
Reminding them to
be Respectful, Responsible, and Kind.
ü Monitoring school supplies. Your child must come prepared to work; this
includes having pencils and their homework
folder everyday.

Amazing School Year will end June 20th
Good evening!
Here come the tears! This school year will be over June 20th and our class will be gearing up for 4th grade!
This year has been full of laughter and tears! We each have grown so much academically, behaviorally, physically, and emotionally.

Update on Field Trip to the Zoo
I'm happy to report that all 28 of the students from our classroom were able to enjoy the most beautiful day at Roger Williams Park Zoo, along with the rest of the third grade team from our school.
The weather was amazing with sunshine and warmth, and the zoo was full of curious children from all over Rhode Island. The students were able to learn interesting facts about the ecosystems and habitats of a variety of animals.
Along with learning facts, they were able to spend time socializing with their peers and enjoying lots of laughter and fun experiences together.
For some students in my class, this was the first time they went to a zoo. It was amazing and heartwarming to see the curiosity and wonder that overtook their faces when they learned new facts. The smiles and the giggles, and the out-right, loud laughter made my heart smile.
It was the best field trip ever!

Memorial Day
Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, but it's difficult to prove the origins of the day. There is also evidence that a women's group in the South decorated graves before the end of the Civil War. In either case, Memorial Day has had numerous starts due to the human need to honor the dead. Though some people think it's a day to honor any and all dead, Memorial Day is intended to honor those who have given their all in service to our country.

Field Trip to the Zoo to learn about Ecosystems and Habitats
Our whole third grade class will be walking to Roger Williams Park Zoo on Wednesday May 21, 2014. Parents please make sure you sign those permission slips and send them into school ASAP. No student can go on the field trip without a signed permission slip and an emergency contact phone number. Students, make sure you dress appropriately with comfortable sneakers. It will be party cloudy and between 54 to 69 degrees. We will be leaving the school at 9:15am, please be on time! We will have breakfast at school and lunch at the park. Do not bring any electronic devices. We are not responsible for any lost, stolen or broken electronics.
Hope everyone gets to go enjoy the beautiful and adventurous day at the zoo from third grade.

End of the Year Testing
Last week was a fun-filled week, with Spelling Bees, Amazing Words Hat Parade and Favorite Concept Quilts! Reading is an amazing way to get children excited about learning.
Within the last couple of weeks, students have been tested in the areas of Math and Reading to demonstrate their knowledge of overall skills learned in third grade. They made great improvements from the beginning of the school year until now. There will be a few more tests to demonstrate that understanding before the year is over.
Beyond testing, the students will be reviewing lots of already learned skills to help remind them of what they learned throughout the year to better prepare them for fourth grade.
This is a reminder that homework is based on lessons learned currently or previously learned. The homework assignments are not online at this moment because I get them from various sources. In the future, I will try to post homework online.

illustration of the word. (The hat can be made any way you choose) The
classrooms will parade through the school while wearing the hats. (Each grade
level will parade together so everyone will be able to see all hats!!)
